Domain Manager: Change the Nameservers of a Domain

How can I change my domain's nameservers in the Webland Domain Manager?

Do you want to change your domain's nameservers, for example because your website is hosted by another provider or you want to move your DNS management to a different provider?

The Webland Domain Manager allows you to update the nameservers of your registered domain yourself.

This guide explains how to make the change and what you should check to keep your website and email services accessible.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies exclusively to customers who manage their domains through the Domain Manager on the previous Webland platform (Classic).

You can access it here:

Are you already using the new Webland platform (WHMCS)? Then log in via the new Webland website. The following steps do not apply to the new platform.

What Are Nameservers?

Nameservers are an essential part of the Domain Name System (DNS).

They identify which DNS servers are responsible for your domain and provide the corresponding DNS information.

This includes, for example:

  • A records: Connect a domain name to an IPv4 address.

  • AAAA records: Connect a domain name to an IPv6 address.

  • MX records: Specify which mail servers receive emails for your domain.

  • CNAME records: Point a hostname to another hostname.

  • TXT records: Are used for SPF, DKIM and domain verification, among other purposes.

When you change your domain's nameservers, you change which DNS servers are responsible for your domain.

Important: Existing DNS records are not automatically transferred to your new DNS provider when you change nameservers.

Requirements

To change your domain's nameservers, you need:

  • A domain managed through the previous Webland Domain Manager.

  • Your Contact ID (WL-ID) and Domain Manager password.

  • The nameserver addresses provided by your chosen DNS provider.

  • A correctly configured DNS zone with the new provider.

At least two valid nameservers are required for your domain's configuration.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Log in to the Domain Manager

  1. Select Domain Manager.

  2. Log in using your Contact ID and password.

Note: Your Contact ID begins with WL and contains seven digits, for example WL-1234567. You can find it on your domain invoice.

Step 2: Select the desired domain

  1. Open the overview of your registered domains.

  2. Find the domain whose nameservers you want to change.

  3. Select the corresponding domain.

  4. Click Edit Selected Domain Names.

Step 3: Edit the nameserver information

  1. Find the Nameserver Information section in the window that opens.

Which Nameservers Does Webland Use?

If you want Webland to manage your DNS, you can use the following nameservers:

Nameserver

Hostname

Nameserver 1

ns1.webland.ch

Nameserver 2

ns2.webland.ch

Nameserver 3

ns3.webland.ch

Nameserver 4

ns4.webland.ch

At least two valid nameservers are required.

You can also configure all four Webland nameservers.

Using an external DNS provider? Enter the nameservers supplied by that provider instead.

Important: Check Your DNS Records Before Making Changes

Before changing your nameservers, make sure all required DNS records are already configured with your new DNS provider.

The following records are particularly important:

DNS Record

Purpose

A

Points your domain to your web server's IPv4 address

AAAA

Points your domain to your web server's IPv6 address

MX

Specifies the mail servers responsible for receiving emails

CNAME

Points a hostname to another hostname

TXT

Contains SPF, DKIM and verification information, among other data

Example

Your domain is registered with Webland, but your website is hosted by an external provider.

If you change the nameservers to that provider, the appropriate DNS zone must already be configured there.

If you continue using Webland's email services, the required MX and email authentication records must also be configured correctly with the new DNS provider.

Otherwise, you may experience problems sending or receiving emails.

Important: Check all required DNS records before switching nameservers to reduce the risk of interruptions to your website and email services.

How Long Does a Nameserver Change Take?

After saving and confirming the new nameservers, it may take some time for the changes to become effective across the internet.

Due to DNS caching, the transition can take several hours. In some cases, it may take up to 24–48 hours.

During this period, different internet providers may temporarily use different DNS information.

Important Notes

  • At least two nameservers: A minimum of two valid nameservers must be configured.

  • DNS records: Existing DNS records are not automatically transferred to the new provider.

  • Website: Missing or incorrect A, AAAA or CNAME records may affect website availability.

  • Email: Missing or incorrect MX records may prevent emails from being received.

  • DNS propagation: Changes may take time to become effective due to DNS caching.

  • Domain registration: Changing nameservers does not transfer your domain registration to another provider.

  • Webland hosting: Your domain can remain registered with Webland even if you use external nameservers.

Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting

Can I change my domain's nameservers myself?

Yes. Log in to the Webland Domain Manager, select the desired domain and click Edit Selected Domain Names.

You can then update the nameservers in the Nameserver Information section.

Where can I find my new provider's nameservers?

Your new hosting or DNS provider will supply the required nameservers.

They are often available in the provider's customer portal or setup instructions.

How many nameservers do I need?

At least two valid nameservers are required for your domain's configuration.

Can I keep my domain registered with Webland and use external nameservers?

Yes. Domain registration and DNS management can be handled by different providers.

Will my DNS records be transferred automatically?

No. The required DNS records must already exist with your new DNS provider.

Before making the change, check the records used by your website and email services.

Why is my website no longer accessible after changing nameservers?

Possible reasons include:

  • The DNS transition has not yet fully completed.

  • A required A or AAAA record is missing.

  • The DNS zone is not configured correctly with the new provider.

  • A required CNAME record is missing or incorrect.

Why am I no longer receiving emails after the change?

Check whether the correct MX records are configured with your new DNS provider.

If you continue using Webland's email services, the corresponding Webland mail servers must be configured correctly.

Can I switch back to Webland's nameservers?

Yes. You can reconfigure the Webland nameservers in the Domain Manager.

Before doing so, make sure your DNS zone is correctly configured with Webland.

Tip

Prepare the DNS zone with your new provider before changing your domain's nameservers.

Pay particular attention to the records used for your website, email services and domain verification.

After the change, test your website's accessibility and verify that you can send and receive emails successfully.

Done! You now know how to change your domain's nameservers through the previous Webland Domain Manager and what to consider before making the switch.
