Essential Hosting: Changing a Domain’s Nameservers

Learn how to connect your domain to another DNS provider’s nameservers. This determines which provider manages your domain’s DNS records.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies to customers with Essential Hosting on the new Webland platform (WHMCS). The relevant domain must also have been registered through or transferred to this platform.

Do you use the System Configurator or Domain Manager? Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to the classic platform.

Is your domain registered with another provider? Change the nameservers with that provider.

What does changing nameservers do?

After the switch, your domain’s DNS records are managed by the new DNS provider. Your domain registration remains with your existing registrar. Changing nameservers does not transfer website files or email mailboxes.

Connecting a domain to a website provider does not always require a nameserver change. Providers such as Wix and WordPress.com also support connections through individual DNS records. Follow the instructions for the connection method you selected with your provider.

Requirements and preparation

  • You are signed in to the client area on the new Webland platform.

  • The domain is active and you have the required management permissions.

  • You have received the complete nameserver names from your new provider.

  • The domain and its required DNS zone are configured with the new provider.

Check all required DNS records with the new provider before switching. Changing nameservers does not automatically copy existing records. This includes website addresses, subdomains and the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records used for email.

If you want to continue using Essential Mail, its required DNS records must also be present with the new DNS provider.

If DNSSEC is enabled: Coordinate the switch with your new provider or our support team beforehand. A DNSSEC configuration that does not match the new DNS zone can make your domain unreachable.

1. Open domain management

  1. Click Domains in the main menu.

  2. Select Domain Names.

2. Select the relevant domain

Click the entry for the domain whose nameservers you want to change.

This opens the domain’s management page.

3. Open the nameserver settings

On the Overview page, click DNS.

Here, you can choose between default and custom nameservers.

4. Enter the new nameservers

  1. Select Use custom nameservers (enter below).

  2. Enter your new provider’s nameservers in the available fields.

  3. Replace the existing entries with the complete nameserver list supplied by your provider.

  4. Check the spelling and click Change Nameservers.

Enter nameserver names without https:// or directory paths. Only mix existing and new nameservers if your provider explicitly instructs you to do so.

Review the confirmation or error message displayed afterwards.

Step 5: Disable the Registrar Lock

If the Registrar Lock is enabled for the domain, in some cases you will receive an error message stating that it is enabled when you try to change the domain’s nameservers.

You must then temporarily disable the Registrar Lock in order to change the nameservers.

Click Registrar Lock in the menu on the left-hand side:

Click the Disable Registrar Lock button:

5. Check the switch

The change may take effect sooner, but allow up to 24–48 hours for the transition. The actual time depends partly on the registry and cached DNS responses.

Then check that:

  • Your website is accessible through the intended domain.

  • Required subdomains work.

  • You can send and receive emails.

Keep the previous DNS zone available during the transition.

Frequently asked questions and troubleshooting

Do I need to disable Registrar Lock?

Not necessarily. A transfer-only lock prevents moving the domain to another registrar and does not automatically block nameserver changes.

Only if the error message explicitly identifies Registrar Lock as the reason the change is blocked:

  1. Open Registrar Lock in the menu on the left.

  2. Click Disable Registrar Lock.

  3. Try changing the nameservers again.

  4. Re-enable Registrar Lock after the change succeeds.

If you cannot remove the lock or the error message is unclear, contact our support team.

My website or email has stopped working after the switch.

Check that all required DNS records are configured correctly with the new provider. If DNSSEC is in use, its configuration must also match the new DNS zone.

Where do I change DNS records afterwards?

With the provider whose nameservers your domain uses. Once the switch is complete, changes to the previous Webland DNS zone no longer affect the domain.

The new nameservers are not accepted.

Check the spelling and make sure your new provider has already configured your domain. If the problem continues, contact our support team and include the domain, the intended nameservers and the exact error message.
