Learn how to create, edit and delete DNS records in the client area. These records connect your domain to services such as websites, email platforms and external providers.
Who is this guide for?
This guide applies exclusively to Essential Hosting without cPanel on the new Webland platform (WHMCS) and to domains whose DNS zones are managed there.
Do you use the System Configurator or Domain Manager? Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to the classic Webland platform.
Does your domain use an external provider’s nameservers? Update the DNS
records with the responsible DNS provider. Changes to the zone shown here only take effect if that zone is actually used for the relevant domain.
Requirements
Your Essential Hosting is managed on the new Webland platform.
The relevant domain’s DNS zone is available in your client account.
You are signed in to the client area and have the required DNS management permissions.
You know the required DNS values. Obtain these from the provider of the service you want to connect.
Check changes carefully. Incorrect or deleted DNS records can affect website availability and email delivery.
1. Open DNS management
Click Domains in the main menu.
Select Manage DNS.
The overview displays the DNS zones you can manage through your client account.
2. Select the relevant domain
Find the domain and click its pencil icon.
This opens the DNS zone and its existing records.
3. Add a DNS record
Click Add Record.
Select the required record type.
Complete the displayed fields according to your service provider’s instructions.
Check the name, target value and any additional settings, such as MX priority.
Click Confirm.
The new record then appears in the DNS zone.
4. Edit an existing DNS record
Find the record in the DNS list.
Click its pencil icon.
Update the required values.
Check your entries and click Confirm.
The change is saved. Previously cached DNS responses may temporarily continue to contain the old values.
5. Delete a DNS record
Find the record you want to remove.
Click its trash icon.
Check the selected record and confirm the deletion.
The record is removed from the DNS zone. Only delete records that are no longer needed.
Confirm the deletion:
Which DNS record types are available?
Type | Purpose |
A | Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. |
AAAA | Maps a domain name to an IPv6 address, provided this record type is available in DNS management. |
CNAME | Points a domain name to another domain name. It is not a browser redirect. |
MX | Specifies the mail servers for incoming email. A lower priority number is preferred. |
TXT | Stores text information, for example for SPF, DKIM, DMARC or domain verification. |
SRV | Specifies a target server, port and other connection details for particular services. |
Use the values supplied by the relevant service provider. An AAAA record is only appropriate if the target server is reachable at the specified IPv6 address.
6. Check the change
After saving, first check that the record appears correctly in the overview. Then test the affected website or service.
There is no fixed waiting period for every DNS change. Timing depends partly on the previous TTL and already cached responses. Changes may become visible within minutes, or later if longer cache times apply.
Lowering the TTL afterwards does not shorten the lifetime of responses that have already been cached.
Frequently asked questions and troubleshooting
My DNS change has no effect.
Check that:
You edited the correct DNS zone.
The domain actually uses the nameservers associated with that zone.
The record type, name and target value are correct.
The change was saved.
Previous DNS responses are no longer being served from caches.
My website is unavailable after a change.
Check the A, AAAA and CNAME records for the affected address. Make sure they lead to the intended web server and that the server is configured for the domain.
My email has stopped working after a change.
Check the MX records and the server names they depend on. Also check whether required SPF, DKIM or DMARC records were changed or deleted.
I do not know which values to enter.
Ask the provider of the service you want to connect. They should supply the record type, name, target value and any additional settings.
If you need help applying those instructions, contact our support team and include the affected domain and the provider’s requirements.
