System Configurator: Publish a Website via FTP

How can I upload and publish my website on the web server using FileZilla and FTP?

This guide explains how to upload and publish your website on the previous Webland platform (Classic) using an FTP client. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to transfer files from your computer to your web hosting and make your website available online.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies exclusively to customers who manage their hosting through the System Configurator on the previous Webland platform (Classic).

You can access it at classic.webland.ch.

Are you already using the new Webland platform (WHMCS)? Then log in via the new Webland website. The following steps do not apply to the new platform.

Requirements

To publish your website via FTP, the following requirements must be met:

  • You have an active hosting subscription on the previous Webland platform (Classic).

  • You have the FTP login credentials for your hosting.

  • Your website files are saved on your computer.

  • You have installed an FTP client such as FileZilla or can download one.

  • Your domain points to the corresponding web hosting so that your website can be accessed using your domain name.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Download an FTP client

To upload your website to the web server, you need an FTP client.

We recommend FileZilla, a program that allows you to transfer files between your computer and your web server.

You can download FileZilla from the official website:

2. Install and launch FileZilla

  1. Download the appropriate FileZilla version for your operating system.

  2. Install FileZilla according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Launch the application on your computer.

3. Enter your FTP login credentials

To establish a connection to your web hosting, you need the FTP login credentials provided in your hosting access confirmation.

Enter the following information in FileZilla:

  • Host: Your domain without www (e.g. mydomain.ch)

  • Username: Your FTP username from the access confirmation (e.g. www123)

  • Password: The corresponding FTP password from the access confirmation

  • Port: 21

Then click Quickconnect to establish a connection to your web server.

Note: You can manage your FTP users and their login credentials through the System Configurator.

4. Upload your website files to the web server

Once the FTP connection has been established successfully, FileZilla displays two main sections:

  • Left side: Your local files and folders on your computer.

  • Right side: The files and directories on your web server.

To upload your website:

  1. On the left side, navigate to the folder containing your website files.

  2. On the right side, open the appropriate destination directory on your web hosting.

  3. Select the files and folders you want to upload.

  4. Drag the selected files from the left side to the right side to start the transfer.

  5. Wait until the file transfer has been completed.

5. Select the correct destination directory

To make your website accessible online, the files must be stored in the correct directory.

Linux Hosting

For Linux hosting, upload your website files to the www directory.

Windows Hosting

For Windows hosting, you can upload your website files directly to the home directory.

Important: Make sure you upload your files to the correct directory. Otherwise, your website may not be displayed as expected.

6. Verify your website publication

After successfully uploading your website files, you can check whether your website is accessible.

  1. Open your web browser.

  2. Enter your domain name in the address bar.

  3. Check whether your website is displayed correctly.

If your website is not displayed, verify that your files were uploaded to the correct directory and that your domain points to the corresponding hosting account.

Important Notes

  • FTP login credentials: Use the credentials provided in your Webland hosting access confirmation.

  • FTP user management: You can manage your FTP users through the System Configurator.

  • Port 21: This port is used for FTP and explicit FTPS. The port alone does not determine whether the connection is encrypted.

  • Encrypted connection: Whenever possible, use an encrypted FTPS connection, provided it is supported by your hosting.

  • Destination directory: For Linux hosting, upload your website files to the www directory. For Windows hosting, use the home directory.

Technical Note on TLS Resumption

TLS session resumption is currently not supported on Windows servers.

If FileZilla displays a corresponding warning, you can enable the available option to continue establishing the connection.

Important: Make sure the connection remains encrypted. A warning should not result in unintentionally switching to an unencrypted connection.

Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting

Which FTP client can I use?

We recommend FileZilla. The application is available for Windows and macOS and allows you to transfer files between your computer and your web server.

Where can I find my FTP login credentials?

Your original FTP login credentials can be found in your Webland hosting access confirmation.

You can also manage your FTP users through the System Configurator.

Which directory should I upload my website files to?

This depends on your hosting operating system:

  • Linux Hosting: www directory

  • Windows Hosting: Home directory

Why is my website not displayed after uploading the files?

Check whether:

  • All website files were uploaded successfully.

  • The files are stored in the correct destination directory.

  • Your domain points to the corresponding web hosting.

What should I do if the FTP connection is not working?

First, verify the following settings:

  • Hostname or domain

  • FTP username

  • FTP password

  • Port 21

  • Connection settings in FileZilla

If you still cannot establish a connection, please contact Webland Support.

What does the TLS Resumption warning mean?

TLS Resumption refers to the reuse of a previously established secure TLS session.

This feature is currently not supported on Windows servers.

If FileZilla displays a corresponding warning, you can use the available option to continue, provided the connection remains encrypted.

Tip

Whenever possible, use an encrypted FTP connection (FTPS) and verify that your website is displayed correctly after each file transfer.

This helps ensure that your files have been uploaded successfully and your website is accessible as expected.

Done! You have successfully uploaded your website files to your web hosting via FTP and can now access your website using your domain name.
