Use File Manager in cPanel to delete files and directories. If you move them to Trash, you can restore them later when needed.
Who is this guide for?
This guide applies exclusively to customers whose hosting is managed on the new Webland platform (WHMCS) and whose hosting plan includes cPanel.
Essential Hosting without cPanel: This guide does not apply to your hosting.
Previous platform using System Configurator or Domain Manager: Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to that platform.
Important information
Deleting website files can make pages or features unavailable. Back up important content first.
Deleting a directory also deletes the files and subdirectories inside it.
Files in Trash still use storage space.
If you skip or empty Trash, you can no longer restore those files through it. Recovery then requires a suitable backup.
Requirements
Before you begin, make sure you:
Have access to your cPanel hosting service.
Know which files or directories you want to delete or restore.
Step 1: Sign in to cPanel
Find your hosting service in the active services overview in the client area.
Click “Log in to cPanel”.
You will be signed in to cPanel automatically.
Step 2: Open File Manager
Open the “Files” section in cPanel and click “File Manager”.
Step 3: Move a file or directory to Trash
Navigate to the content you want to delete.
Select the file or directory.
Click “Delete”.
Review the selected items in the confirmation dialog.
Leave the option to skip Trash unchecked so that you can restore the content through Trash later.
Confirm the action.
The selected content moves to Trash and is no longer present at its original location.
Step 4: Restore files from Trash
To recover deleted content:
Click “View Trash” in File Manager.
Select the file or directory you want to restore.
Click “Restore”.
Confirm the restoration.
Open the original location and refresh the file list if necessary.
Check that the content is present again. For website files, also test the affected page or feature.
Important: If a file with the same name already exists at the original location, back it up before restoring and pay attention to any conflict messages.
Optional: Empty Trash permanently
If you no longer need the deleted content and want to free up storage:
Open “View Trash”.
Review all its contents carefully.
Click “Empty Trash”.
Confirm permanent deletion.
The removed content can no longer be restored through Trash.
Troubleshooting
The deleted file is not in Trash
Trash may have been skipped during deletion or emptied afterwards. The file may also have been removed using another tool. Check whether a backup exists. Webland Support can help clarify available recovery options.
Restoration fails
Check the error message and whether an item with the same name already exists at the original location. Contact Webland Support with the affected file path if necessary.
My website stopped working after deletion
Restore the affected files or directories from Trash and test again. If they are no longer in Trash, you need a suitable backup.
Deleting files did not free up space
Files in Trash still count towards storage usage. Space is freed only when they are permanently removed. The storage display may take some time to update.
