cPanel: Extract a ZIP file

Use File Manager in cPanel to extract a ZIP file directly on your hosting. The files and subdirectories it contains are placed in your chosen destination directory.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies exclusively to customers whose hosting is managed on the new

Webland platform (WHMCS) and whose hosting plan includes cPanel.

Essential Hosting without cPanel: This guide does not apply to your hosting.

Previous platform using System Configurator or Domain Manager: Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to that platform.

Important information

  • Existing files may be overwritten if the ZIP archive contains files with matching names and paths. Back up affected files first or initially extract the archive into an empty directory.

  • Extraction requires additional storage space. The extracted contents may be considerably larger than the ZIP file.

  • ZIP support must be available on the server.

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you:

  • Have access to your cPanel hosting service.

  • Have already uploaded the ZIP file to your hosting.

  • Know where you want to extract its contents.

Step 1: Sign in to cPanel

  1. Find your hosting service in the active services overview in the client area.

  2. Click “Log in to cPanel”.

You will be signed in to cPanel automatically.

Step 2: Open File Manager

Open the “Files” section in cPanel and click “File Manager”.

Your hosting account’s file overview will open.

Step 3: Select the ZIP file

  1. Navigate to the directory containing the ZIP file.

  2. Click the ZIP file once to select it.

  3. Click “Extract” in the toolbar.

Step 4: Choose the destination and extract

  1. Check the destination path shown in the dialog.

  2. Change the path if you want to extract the contents into a different directory.

  3. Click “Extract Files”.

Wait for the process to finish. File Manager will then display the extraction results.

Note: The directory structure inside the ZIP archive is preserved. For example, if the archive contains a folder named website, its files may appear in a website subdirectory within your chosen destination.

Step 5: Check the result

  1. Check the results window for errors.

  2. Click “Close”.

  3. Open the destination directory and refresh the file list if necessary.

  4. Check that the expected files and subdirectories are present.

If you extracted website files, test the affected website in your browser afterwards.

Troubleshooting

“Extract” is greyed out or missing

Check that you have selected the ZIP file. If the function remains unavailable, contact Webland Support.

Extraction fails

Check the error message and available storage space. Also check that the ZIP file opens on your computer and was uploaded completely.

I cannot find the extracted files

Check the selected destination path and refresh the file list. Look inside any subdirectories created from the archive.

My website stopped working after extraction

Check whether existing website files were overwritten or the contents were extracted into the wrong directory. Restore the affected files from your backup if necessary.
