Use File Manager in cPanel to move files and directories within your hosting account without downloading them. After the move, the selected content is stored in the new location and is no longer present at its original location.
Who is this guide for?
This guide applies exclusively to customers whose hosting is managed on the new Webland platform (WHMCS) and whose hosting plan includes cPanel.
Essential Hosting without cPanel: This guide does not apply to your hosting.
Previous platform using System Configurator or Domain Manager: Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to that platform.
Important information
Moving content changes its file paths. Links, image references and application settings are not updated automatically.
Moving a directory also moves the files and subdirectories inside it.
Check whether the destination already contains files with matching names. They may be overwritten during the move.
Note the original path and back up important content before making changes.
Moving content within the same hosting account does not free up storage space.
Requirements
Before you begin, make sure you:
Have access to your cPanel hosting service.
Know which files or directories you want to move.
Have already created the destination directory.
Step 1: Sign in to cPanel
Find your hosting service in the active services overview in the client area.
Click “Log in to cPanel”.
You will be signed in to cPanel automatically.
Step 2: Open File Manager
Open the “Files” section in cPanel and click “File Manager”.
Step 3: Select files or directories
Navigate to the current location.
Select the files or directories you want to move.
Click “Move” in the toolbar.
Step 4: Specify the destination directory
Enter the destination directory’s path in the dialog. Use the directory path shown in File Manager as your reference.
Check the destination path and selected items.
Click “Move File(s)” or “Move File”.
The selected content is moved to the destination directory.
Alternative: You can also drag a file into the desired directory. Make sure you release it over the correct destination.
Step 5: Check the result
Open the destination directory and refresh the file list if necessary.
Check that the moved content is present.
Update affected links and paths in your website or application.
Test the affected pages and features.
If you moved a domain’s website directory, its Document Root must also point to the new location.
Troubleshooting
The file does not appear after moving
Check the destination path and refresh the file list. Also check the original directory in case the move did not complete successfully.
Moving fails
Check that the destination directory exists and that you have the required permissions. A directory cannot be moved into itself or one of its own subdirectories. Read the displayed error message.
My website stopped working after moving content
Check the affected file paths and document root. If necessary, move the content back to its original location and test again.
