cPanel: Create and restore backups

Use Backup Wizard in cPanel to back up your entire hosting account or selected parts of it. You can restore partial backups through the same wizard.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies exclusively to customers whose hosting is managed on the new Webland platform (WHMCS) and whose hosting plan includes cPanel.

Essential Hosting without cPanel: This guide does not apply to your hosting.

Previous platform using System Configurator or Domain Manager: Sign in at classic.webland.ch. The steps below do not apply to that platform.

Which backup type do you need?

Backup type

Purpose

Restoration

Full Backup

Backs up the cPanel account, for example for a server migration.

Cannot be restored directly through Backup Wizard. Contact Webland Support.

Partial Backup

Backs up selected areas, such as the home directory or a database.

Can be restored through Backup Wizard for the corresponding area.

Important: A home directory backup does not replace a database backup. For a website such as WordPress, you need both the website files and the associated database.

Important information

  • Create a current backup before making major changes.

  • Restoration may overwrite existing files and data. Back up the current state before restoring an earlier version.

  • Make sure sufficient storage is available. An exhausted quota can prevent backup creation.

  • Keep a copy outside your hosting, for example securely on your computer.

  • A cPanel account backup does not include your Webland customer account, invoices or contracts.

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you:

  • Have access to your cPanel hosting service.

  • Can open Backup Wizard.

  • Have a suitable partial backup file on your computer if you want to restore data.

Step 1: Sign in to cPanel

  1. Find your hosting service in the active services overview in the client area.

  2. Click “Log in to cPanel”.

You will be signed in to cPanel automatically.

Step 2: Open Backup Wizard

Open the “Files” section in cPanel and click “Backup Wizard”.

Then follow the relevant procedure: create a full backup, create a partial backup or restore a partial backup.

Step 3: Create a full backup

  1. Click “Back Up”.

  2. Select “Full Backup”.

  3. Under “Backup Destination”, select “Home Directory”. This initially saves the archive in your hosting account’s home directory.

  4. Enter an email address for the completion notification. If you do not want a notification, select “Do not send email notification of backup completion”.

  5. Click “Generate Backup”.

Creation may take some time, depending on the amount of data. A message confirming that the process has started does not mean the backup is complete.

Once creation has finished:

  1. Reopen the “Full Backup” section if necessary.

  2. Find the backup under “Backups Available for Download”.

  3. Click its filename to download it to your computer.

A full backup cannot be restored using “Restore” in Backup Wizard. Contact Webland Support if you want to restore the entire account.

Step 4: Create a partial backup

  1. Open Backup Wizard and click “Back Up”.

  2. Select the required area, such as “Home Directory” or “MySQL Databases”.

  3. For databases, select the database you want to back up.

  4. Download the available backup file to your computer.

Repeat this process for every area you need.

To create a consistent website backup, back up the files and database as close together as possible and avoid making website changes during the process.

Step 5: Restore a partial backup

Before starting, check the backup’s date, contents and associated hosting account.

  1. Open Backup Wizard.

  2. Click “Restore”.

  3. Select the appropriate area, such as “Home Directory” or “MySQL Databases”.

  4. Click “Choose File” and select the matching partial backup file on your computer.

  5. Click “Upload”.

Uploading starts the restoration process. Wait for completion and check the displayed messages for errors.

Step 6: Check the restoration

Open the affected website and test key features such as login, forms and checkout.

If you restore both files and a database, use matching backup states. Mismatched versions can cause errors.

Troubleshooting

My full backup does not appear for download

Check whether creation is still running and whether sufficient storage is available. The download procedure described above applies to the “Home Directory” destination.

My backup file cannot be restored

Check that you selected a partial backup and the corresponding restoration type. Do not upload a full account backup here.

My website does not work after restoration

Check that both the required files and the matching database were restored. If necessary, contact Webland Support with your hosting service, the backup date and the error message.
