System Configurator: Back Up and Restore an MSSQL Database

How long are MSSQL database backups available, and how can I restore a database?

This guide explains which automatic backups are available for your Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) database on the previous Webland platform (Classic) and how to access the Backup and Restore functions through the System Configurator.

Who is this guide for?

This guide applies exclusively to customers who manage their hosting through the System Configurator on the previous Webland platform (Classic) and use an MSSQL database.

You can access it at classic.webland.ch.

Are you already using the new Webland platform (WHMCS)? Then log in via the new Webland website. The following steps do not apply to the new platform.

What is an MSSQL Backup?

An MSSQL backup is a saved copy of a Microsoft SQL Server database.

An available backup allows you to restore your database to an earlier state if necessary.

This can be useful when:

  • Data has been accidentally modified or deleted.

  • Problems occur after an update.

  • An application can no longer access the database correctly.

  • A previous database state needs to be restored.

Important: Restoring a backup may cause changes made after the selected backup date to be lost.

How Long Are MSSQL Backups Available?

The number of available backups depends on the size of your MSSQL database.

Databases Between 1 GB and 4 GB

For MSSQL databases between 1 GB and 4 GB, the following backups are available:

  • 5 daily backups

  • 3 weekly backups

  • 1 monthly backup

Databases Larger Than 4 GB

For MSSQL databases larger than 4 GB, the following backups are available:

  • 3 daily backups

  • 2 weekly backups

  • No monthly backups under this backup retention policy

Note: These figures refer to the number of retained backups. You can check the actual available restore points in the MSSQL management section.

To access your MSSQL backups, the following requirements must be met:

  • You have an active hosting subscription on the previous Webland platform (Classic).

  • You know your customer number and customer password.

  • An MSSQL database has been configured on your hosting account.

  • You have access to database management in the System Configurator.

4. Check available backups

Open the corresponding Backup and Restore functions in the MSSQL management section.

Check which backups are currently available for your database.

The number of stored backups depends on the size of your database.

5. Restore an MSSQL database

To restore an existing database backup:

  1. Select the affected MSSQL database.

  2. Open the corresponding Restore function.

  3. Select the desired available backup.

  4. Review the backup date and selected database.

  5. Confirm the restore operation using the available options.

  6. Wait until the process has been completed.

Important: Restoring a backup may replace the current database contents with the data from the selected backup. Whenever possible, back up important current data before starting a restore operation.

Important Notes

  • Database size: The number of available backups depends on the size of your MSSQL database.

  • Retention: Older backups are not retained indefinitely.

  • Restore point: Carefully check the date of the selected backup before restoring it.

  • Data loss: Changes made after the backup date may be lost during restoration.

  • Correct database: Make sure you select the correct MSSQL database.

  • Website files: An MSSQL database backup does not automatically include all your website files.

Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting

Where can I find the MSSQL Backup and Restore functions?

Log in to the System Configurator and navigate to:

Hosting / Manage Email → Manage → Databases → MS SQL

There you will find the available management functions for your MSSQL database.

How many MSSQL backups are available?

This depends on the database size:

  • Under 1 GB: 6 daily, 3 weekly, and 2 monthly backups.

  • 1 to 4 GB: 5 daily, 3 weekly, and 1 monthly backup.

  • Over 4 GB: 3 daily and 2 weekly backups.

Can I restore an MSSQL backup from any date?

No. Only backups that are still available within the applicable retention policy can be restored.

What happens to my current data during a restore?

A restore operation may replace the current database contents with the data from the selected backup.

Changes made after the backup date may therefore be lost.

Are my website files included in the backup?

An MSSQL backup covers the database. Your website files are not automatically included.

For a complete backup, you should also consider backing up the relevant website files.

What should I do if the backup I need is not available?

First, check the backup retention policy that applies to your database size.

If you need assistance, contact Webland Support and provide the affected domain, database, and desired restore date.

Additional Information

You can find a detailed description of the MSSQL Backup and Restore functions in the official Webland documentation:

Tip

For important data, do not rely exclusively on the automatically available MSSQL backups.

Create additional, independently stored backups when needed, especially before making major changes to your website or database.

Done! You now know how many MSSQL backups are available on the previous Webland platform and how to restore an existing database backup.
